2007 - The First Adventure

Hope it was a great start to the New Year for everyone. I've already filled you in on our adventures for NYE so won't go there again.

Our first adventure of the year was a trip to Adelaide. Bill for work and me for the final fling before I started back at work on the 15th Jan. We decided to drive over taking in the sights of the Great Ocean Road, a trip well worth while if you ever get the chance. The Pier to Pub swim was in progress as we drove through Lorne. People everywhere in and out of the water. Hope the Pub was worth it at the end. The 12 Apostles, London Bridge, The Bay of Martyrs, are certainly the most spectacular parts of the drive. We stayed at Warrnambool the 1st night and spent the next morning exploring the Fletcher Jones Gardens and a couple of hours taking a step back in time while we explored the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village.

We then continued up the coast to Mt Gambier where we rested the 2nd night. Well the idea was to rest until we found out that Umpherston Cave Garden was floodlit at night. So of course we had to go and see this natural wonder ourselves. We watched all the kids feed the possums. Dozens of them all very fat as this happens every night. The cave garden is just amazing, walking in through the park you have no idea that there is a hugh sinkhole in the ground just ahead of you. All of a sudden this whole garden opens up. What a WOW factor. There is another of these sinkhole gardens just behind City Hall in the main street. We saw them both at night but went back the next morning to see them in daylight. The morning also saw us venturing down into Engelbrecht Cave, a dry limestone cave, that run unders the town. The cave is thought to be around 30 to 40 million years old and is very popular with cave divers. We stayed dry. The Blue Lake on the way out of town was also pretty special.

We continued to Adelaide along the coast road of SA looking at Beachport, Robe and Kingston along the way, all nice little seaside villages. Then following the Coorong along until we met the Murray and then straight down the Princes Hwy into Adelaide and through to Glenelg, our final destination. Bill worked for the next 4 days and I relaxed by the pool and did some sightseeing. A great way to fill in the days. Especially the visit to the Haighs Chocolate Factory.

We came home in the one day, with a detour to Mannum, home of the Riverboats. From there it was the long drive home arriving late that night.

Well the 15th dawned bright & sunny and I headed off as if I had been doing it every day. I survived the day and the subsequent week and now my time at home is but a distant memory. Tuesday night saw Bill off again for another trip and I picked Auntie Muriel up one hour later for her holiday in Melbourne. She arrived at 9.00pm and the temp was still 38. Today it has finally dropped and the rain has started so we are hoping that this might be the much needed end to the bushfires that have been burning for the last 50 days. Fingers crossed.

Well now that you must all be falling asleep I'll leave you in peace.

until next time..........
